Why go to therapy
|
|
People tend to turn to therapy
as a last resort. When their way of addressing their difficulties
is not working, people can then generally accept help.
I have always been amazed at how people are so ready to
go to a medical doctor for the slightest physical pain
or discomfort. And yet people avoid going to a psychotherapist
even when their suffering is extreme.
In fact, just like our body over time suffers numerous
stresses, traumas, breaks and scars, so does our psyche.
We all have emotional scars, fractures, traumas that build
up over time. Not attending to this aspect of our health
can be debilitating in the long run. Sooner or later,
these emotional scars flare up and people begin experiencing
symptoms like depression, anxiety, anhedonia (lack of
pleasure in general everyday activities) and a general
sense of dissatisfaction that doesn’t go away no
matter what one does.
