The job of the therapist |
|
The job of the therapist is to
listen and understand both conscious and unconscious communications
and then to provide the environment where people can access
their own internal resources to do the all-important work
of therapy. A big part of healing must come from within
the person. After all, when therapy is over, the client
must go out into the world and fend for him/herself. Therapy
is ultimately about teaching clients how to access their
own internal reservoir of strength, confidence and wisdom;
how to find their own solutions to everyday problems that
work for them.
However, more often than not, people lose touch with their
sense of self and are unaware of their inner resources.
The job of the therapist is to help them find the key
to unlock that internal vault of strength that people
can turn to for the rest of their lives. The job of the
therapist is to get to know their client, recognize his/her
strengths as well as the hitherto maladaptive solutions
to problems and then to practice with new and more adaptive
solutions to everyday concerns.
