How Psychotherapy
works/
Psychological Symptoms 1

The work
begins with attending to the particular signs
of distress or symptoms you bring in. In attending
to the symptoms it is crucial to be able to read beyond
the immediate discomfort of the presenting problem. It
is important to understand these symptoms as carrying
a communicative value, cluing you in on the deeper issues
that give rise to these particular problems. Symptoms
can be seen as branches on a tree. To really help a person,
the therapist must not only tend to the branches but also
to the invisible roots that feed the problems. Thus successful
therapy is more than just symptom relief. It is about
deeper change and overall growth of the entire system,
the entire person.
